T12 “Phase-out”

As of today, about 500 million T12 fluorescent tubes are still illuminating US buildings every day and are waiting to be replaced according to The National Lighting Bureau (NLB). The “T12 phase-out” government legislation is the strongest driver in the existing buildings lighting retrofit market. The upcoming Department of Energy (DOE) regulations will eliminate the most common T12 lamps starting in July 2012.

In the US, the three most popular technologies currently available in tubular linear fluorescent lighting are:

T12 = old (80 years) and inefficient

T8 = younger (30 years)and higher efficiency

T5 = youngest (10 years) and highest efficiency

The letter ‘T’ in the lighting industry stands for “tubular.” The number directly following the letter “T” indicates the thickness or diameter of that particular tube in eighths of an inch.

T12 = twelve eighths of an inch in diameter or one and one-half inches thick

T8 = eight eighths of an inch in diameter or one inch thick

T5 = five eighths of an inch in diameter or five eighths of an inch thick

SIRE Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of electronic document management, agenda automation, and electronic plan review software, has implemented its electronic plan submittal, review, and approval solution, ActiveReview at the City of Lewisville, Texas. The system went live September 1st, 2011.

ActiveReview will be used primarily by the Lewisville Department of Community Development. Divisions comprising this department are: Engineering, Fire Prevention, and Building. Users from Planning and Zoning, a division within the Department of Economic Development, will utilize ActiveReview as well. City officials have designated three Permit Technicians to administer projects throughout the process until approval.

ActiveReview is also available to Lewisville citizens through an online portal on their existing website. The system has been set up to allow for any homeowner projects to be submitted for city approval, to allow architects to submit plans, and to allow engineers to submit plats and site plans. Additionally, City of Lewisville’s Franchise Utilities staff will be able to review projects through ActiveReview that may affect their easements and can accurately locate their equipment through the system.

According to Cleve Joiner, Certified Building Official, the agency’s main purpose in implementing electronic plan review software was simply to lower its storage, use, and cost of paper, while saving on printing costs as well. As with several government organizations throughout the US, Lewisville is required by law to retain plans and permits, and several external customers were requesting that the city look into acquiring electronic plan review software. As a result of these things, the City Council-directed staff made a goal to work toward “paperless” operations and processes.

The City was awarded a grant for the purpose of acquiring the electronic plan review system, and larger viewing screens and additional equipment were purchased in order to facilitate the project. By implementing ActiveReview, officials are able to demonstrate a new revenue stream for the City while providing savings for the external customer as well. The elimination of paper, printing and fuel costs, saving time away from jobs, and the cost of courier services will result in significant benefits for all parties using the solution.

Joiner said that a few key factors in City of Lewisville choosing SIRE ActiveReview over the competition were the overlay and measurement tools, as well as ActiveReview’s compatibility with all file types including PDF, TIFF, CAD, etc.

Ares was, in Greek religion, the god of war or, more properly, the spirit of battle. I don’t think he had much to do with the renaissance. There is some information on him at this link.
