Plasterers have been around for many years and have constructed some magnificent features. Sadly though, there are less tradesmen around now who are fully skilled in this ancient craft. This may be attributable to several factors.

When we look back through time and in particular, at tradesmen from many years ago, it is an absolute joy to appreciate the shear skill that these older tradesmen had. It is only when we look at different structures and the way they were built that we can truly appreciate the works of art that were created.

Perhaps to some, describing every day building tasks as a work of art may actually seem a little far fetched and even over-rated, but when we consider the workmanship involved and how these old builders and plasterers achieved what they did, with what little tools they had, I think the term is actually quite fitting.

My father was one of those ‘old tradesmen’, a stonemason who indeed was incredibly talented and skilled in construction. In fact, he worked on some of the UK’s greatest structures including the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and also St Paul’s Cathedral.

It was from him that I developed my own skill for working with my hands but it was not working with stone. I developed a love for plastering and trained for several years and worked for many leading contractors before eventually setting up my own building company called 4K Construction Limited.

For the purpose of this article though, I would like to talk about plastering and the change it has undergone.

Plasterers today are still in force but sadly however, the numbers are no where near what they might have been many years ago. This is attributable to many factors and one of those reasons may very well be the fact that the developers of today no longer need the skilled plasterers that would have been used many years ago.

Buildings are now built differently and from a plastering perspective, you would be lucky to even see walls being floated and set anymore. Floating and setting is essentially applying a backing plaster or mortar to the wall and then skimming it up afterwards.

Plasterers in are now using alternative methods to finish walls in houses. Most houses now are built with dry lining or plasterboard as it is more commonly known. It is simply just a case of taping the joints and rubbing in a compound before rubbing down to finish. No substitute for a properly plastered wall though.

There were also many plasterers who specialized in fibrous work which included making and fitting specialist decorative coving and mouldings etc. This was highly skilled work and it is very rare to see this nowadays. There are firms who specialize in old coving and mouldings but you may find that it is very expensive to recreate some old period feature.

I’m sure that plasterers will still be around for some more time yet, but with the advancement of technology and the way building is moving forward all the time, the plasterers of today could very well become obsolete.

Ok, I have read your poster. I was sitting at an airport waiting for my next plane and I looked across from me and saw that poster along the wall.

It looked interesting, so I decided to get up and take a look. The color poster was well designed visually. It had that right kind of flare that catches a person’s attention without being so loud it seems to scream at you. No, this thing is the right balance of images to grab, but not too forcefully.

I read what it had to say, which is about your company, telling me what great service you have. It showed me a friendly looking person who is apparently ready and willing to help me out the second I need any help.

But here is the one thing the poster does not tell me: what should I do next? Yes, it says your company is good and it says I would probably like your service. But does it tell me to actually use your service? No, it does not go there. Does it tell me to call a specific number to get in contact with you, maybe go to a certain web address to find out more information, or even a building address to find you?

I think in the bottom corner of the poster I see the information itself, but nothing about the poster really calls notice to it. Yes, I see it there, but that is about it.

I guess I am supposed to figure out on my own the best means of contacting you. But you know, I do not really feel like going to the trouble of gaining that kind of information. In fact, I would say that you were the one buying poster printing, so should not you be the one to go to the effort to let me know where I am supposed to go next?

Seems like the best thing to me, so I decide to take a walk back to my seat, the poster forgotten, along with a potential sale.

I cannot even recall the amount of times this very situation has played out. Why do so many companies fail to provide that basic call to action that every advertisement should have? This is not even about poster printing specifically. What about postcards, brochures, or flyers? All of them need to have a call to action that lets a person know exactly what they should do next.

A phone number on the ad does not by default mean I know I am supposed to call you. Yes, I know I can call you, but is that the best way of contacting you? Maybe you are advertising a sale and I’m supposed to go into the store. Where is the store located? I would like to know that so I do not have to search through a phone book for you or search online.

Any company that pays for advertising needs to make the job easier on their customers by giving them all the information they will need in a strong call to action. If you cannot be bothered to do that, than I cannot be bothered to buy anything from you.

My mom makes more money than my dad so they decided to file their taxes separately so they can only use my dad tax returns when I apply for financial aid. Is this legal? Also when i fill out the fasfa application do I put my mom information down or only my dads?

You’re supposed to put the taxes based off the head of the household for FAFSA.
Technically that would be the person who brings in the most of the finances, but you could also say that your father is the head of the household.

A google search for website hosting reviews will return pages of sites so, rather than simplifying the process of choosing a website hosting provider, they can make it more difficult. You have to ask how independent these sites are – are they influenced by payments from the hosting companies? No review site can claim to cover all hosting companies so what does determine which ones they include.

Having spent some time looking through website hosting reviews I saw several hosting companies reviewed on many sites but it is not uncommon to see a hosting company highly recommended by one site and not even be mentioned by the next. Sometimes customer reviews are shown but there is no way of knowing if these are real and even if they are, have they been carefully selected.

I think that it is clear that some review site listings are influenced by financial reward.

The more reputable sites state upfront that they get a commission on sales they refer to some or all of the hosting companies which they review (i.e they are affiliates). Other sites do not offer any information on this.

I suspect that some sites are influenced by these payments, others specifically claim to be independent and apply criteria like recommending sites with “happy customers”.

I should point out that there is nothing wrong with hosting companies making payments to affiliates. This is a very common method of marketing but anyone receiving a commission cannot really claim to be independent.

Ultimately the problem with hosting review sites is that having looked at lots of them you can still end up confused. However, at least you will have learned who are the well known names in the market.

My conclusion therefore is that there are too many review sites, many of questionable merit and whilst they serve make you aware of who are the major players in the hosting market they can leave you unsure how to move forward.

Once you are aware of these companies you then need to do your own research i.e. look for independent user feedback and balance this against price. You can also look at forums such as webhostingtalk.com where you can also seek advice if you have specific requirements.

I personally have sites with two hosting companies, one I would recommend and one I wouldn’t. Although I have since discovered that I am not alone with regard to my problem with the second company it relates to an issue I would never have anticipated. This shows that however much research you do you cannot be sure all will go well so I would suggest going for a hosting provider who offers a money back guarantee. You can get up and running during the guarantee period and check that everything is ok. If you experience any problems you can get a refund and try another hosting provider.

When you already have a loan taken out on your home, but the value of your home has since increased albeit from modifications to the home or even due to the local demand of homes in your area, the difference between what you owe and what your home is worth is known as the home’s equity and you can take a loan out using this extra value as the collateral for the loan.

Home equity loans are a great way of updating your home to make it more valuable or even to make a big purchase that you have been wanting. You can use this type of loan to purchase a car, boat or even a second smaller vacation style home.

In most cases you have heard the term second or third mortgage and what these are, are additional loans taken out using the home’s equity as collateral. Furthermore, you do not have to already have an outstanding loan in order to take out an equity loan, you can own the home in full because all that equity is, is the difference between any debts and its value.

You give the lender the deed to the home and the only way to get it back is by paying off the loan. Let’s say that you own your house in full, and although it is valued pretty high, you need to make some changes and additions to really get the most out of the home. In this case you will need to take out a home equity loan which comes in the form of cash and can be used to increase the value of the home. It does not matter if you are planning on selling the home after these improvement or continue to live in it, the point is that you are able to improve your home through the use of a home equity loan.
